When researching ducks to see if they would be manageable on our half-acre, I read a lot about how messy they are. I was concerned that having a small flock of ducks would cause our yard to smell and make a mess everywhere. I didn’t want to clean up after our ducks more than needed. To my surprise, the duck and goose poop disappear when it rains or our lovely sprinkler system soaks all the good nutrients from their poop into the soil.
When it came to housing for our ducks, I couldn’t find a duck house I liked. There were no aesthetically pleasing duck coops that I could tell Jordan, “I want something like this,” and then build it to our specifications. Having chickens already and knowing how much I love walking into our coop to clean it out, I knew I needed my duck coop to be easy to clean to make this duck thing work out. That’s why we created the Easy Clean Duck Coop. It’s aesthetically pleasing; it has an automated door, and, best of all, it’s easy and quick to clean!
Here’s how we clean our Easy Clean Duck Coop in 15 minutes. The purpose of this cleaning is to replace the duck’s bedding so they have something clean to rest on at night.
What you will need to clean your Easy Clean Duck Coop:
- wheelbarrow
- flat-edge shovel
- wood pellets for new bedding
1. Shovel the nasty, poopy bedding into your wheelbarrow. Duck poop is WET. This expands the bedding and makes it easier to shovel out in chunks.
2. I use a flat-edge shovel not to tear the linoleum flooring. The linoleum flooring ensures nothing gets stuck.
3. I get the cracks and crevices by flipping the shovel upside down to drag the bedding and poop towards me so I can shovel it up. We caulked our seams, so shoveling out our coop is much easier.
4. I get all the nasty into the wheelbarrow. I don’t clean out the coop to where it’s shiny and crystal-cleaned unless we need to repair or replace something (this obviously would take more than 15 minutes.)
5. Lastly, I dump pellets in the coop to replace the bedding I shoveled out and marvel at how quickly I did one of our backyard farming chores. Getting it done quickly means I can move on to the next, reducing my time doing chores. It’s a win-win!
Cleaning the Easy Clean Duck Coop is, in fact – EASY! Enjoy your Easy Clean Duck Coop just as much as your cute ducks will.
