This post will be short and sweet. We converted our entry way in one weekend to a more simple, streamlined system.
What We Started With
Our double-door entry doesn’t provide much space when you get inside. For the longest time, I had a hand-me-down sofa table from my parents that they got from my grandma. It had been painted and painted again. I ended up sanding it and just having it live in the space with its bare, unfinished wood. The table collected dust, treasures, random receipts, keys, and junk. I can’t stand clutter; it is a stressor for me when I am at home. This table invited clutter, and it needed to go.
I was not too fond of the space, which was always visible as I passed it multiple times daily. It was messy, and one day, I had enough. There is no photo even to prove the disorganized space, but believe me, you aren’t missing out.
I texted Jordan when he was at work, more or less telling him what we would do over the weekend. But he agreed; something needed to be done. In one weekend, we updated and finished our entryway to make it more streamlined and simple.
The goals
- to provide a place for guests to hang up their jackets.
- Less clutter. More minimalistic.
Our Entry Way
We spend six months out of the year in weather where you would need a jacket. We needed to make this space more usable, especially for our frequent guests at our home. No one ever knew where to put their coat, whether it’s friends or family. It always ended up lying on a couch or chair and, worse, forgotten because it wasn’t seen and remembered on the way out.
We now have a simple, updated entryway to hang coats, backpacks, umbrellas, etc.
The one rule I have is that the hooks cannot be overwhelmed with our jackets and stuff. So, every now and then, I clear the hooks of our stuff to keep them clean and usable. Our dog’s and Susan’s leashes hang in the entryway, ready for the next neighborhood walk.
Materials We Used
- Primed pine trim boards (we used 1×3 for the middle boards, 1×6 for the floor trim, and 1×4 for the top board)
- Spackle – we used Dry Dex Spackle in a tube
- white caulk
- Pure White Sherwin Williams paint color (walls are White Label by Sherwin Williams)
